2)  Application review/screening:  When you have submitted your full-time application, it will be reviewed by a recruiter. The recruiter will review the applicant's education, training, and work experience to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications as stated on the job posting announcement. If all requirements have been met for a full-time position, the applicant will then be set up for the next step of the application process, testing.

All applications for a part-time/seasonal position are sent on directly to the department/division where the vacancy exists for interview. Again, if you have not received notification that your application was received, it is in your best interest to contact the Human Resources Department on or before the application deadline to ensure your application was received.

3) Civil Service Testing:  Employment testing for full-time positions and some part-time positions is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills and abilities for a particular position. The purpose of testing applicants is to evaluate the experience and knowledge that candidates have as it relates to a specific position. The testing process is designed to ensure that each candidate is treated fairly and equitably. Each test will have a minimum score that must be achieved in order to be considered for a position. This cut-off score will be stated on the job posting announcement for each position. Some of the most common types of testing used by the City of Omaha are: written multiple choice exam, a training & experience form, a structured interview, and/or a performance test. Depending on the situation and the position being tested for, one type of testing may be better suited than others. At times, a combination of test types may be used. Learn more about specific tests.

4) Eligibility list:  Once all examinations for full-time positions are completed and scored an eligibility list is formed. The eligibility list is formed by ranking the candidates according to their testing score. The highest score is ranked number one, second highest score is ranked number two, and so on. All applicants will then be notified as to their score, and if applicable, their ranking on the eligibility list. The top scoring candidates from the list are then referred to the hiring department for consideration. After receiving our referrals, the hiring department will then make the final selection. PLEASE NOTE:  YOUR RANKING ON THE ELIGIBILITY LIST DOES NOT GUARANTEE EMPLOYMENT.
