Police Officer Posting 2020

The City of Omaha and the Omaha Police Department are excited for the next application process for Police Officer. There are many details to this process, so I have provided answers to commonly asked questions we receive.

When are applications accepted?

Applications are accepted Monday, February 3 through Thursday, April 2, 2020.

How do I apply?

Completed City of Omaha employment applications must be submitted using the on-line application from the City website. The HR Department implemented a new applicant tracking system in September 2019. Applicants need to create a new account in order to submit an application unless an account has been created since implementation. See the Employment page on the HR site for more details.

How soon will my application be reviewed?

I will review your application within three business days. Please be patient with me due to the volume of applications received.

I applied previously. Did my information and documents transfer to your new application system?

♦Information: possibly. Some candidates who applied for a position with the City of Omaha between March 2013 and August 2019, and who encounter a message indicating that a profile exists, must follow the following instructions: Candidates must enter their username (email address) exactly as it was typed into our previous applicant tracking system. What happens after my application has been reviewed?

Candidates will be contacted via email of their application status. Accepted applicants will be sent an email related to the examination process. This information will contain the testing date and time, study guide, and other essential information.

Do I need to submit a resume, cover letter, or references along with my application?

Candidates can attach any of these documents at the time of application. Attaching documents is not required, as candidates who continue in the application process will eventually be asked by the OPD Backgrounds Unit to submit certain documents along with the background form. Keep in mind that HR does not share these documents with the Backgrounds Unit.

How can I submit my DD-214 and letter of disability from the VA?

Information related to veteran preference will be sent in the initial application acceptance email. Candidates can attach any documents related to veteran preference to their application. This date is to be determined.

What if I previously submitted my DD-214?

I am requesting an accommodation. How can I send you my request?

Applicants requiring an accommodation for the examination because of a disability should advise the Human Resources Department a minimum of 48 hours prior to the examination by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Is there a lateral program for those currently with law enforcement certification?

What are the age requirements to apply?

The posting does require candidates to be 21 years of age prior to the completion of the training program.

Is there a cost to apply and test for this position?


Do you hire people with a criminal record?

We welcome all applicants and encourage anyone interested in the position to apply.

Does my application or place on the eligibility list automatically get me into the academy?

No. This is an application process to potentially lead to placement on the list of eligible candidates. Candidates must submit an application and have it accepted, and then pass all three examinations to be placed on the eligibility list. Those on the list are not guaranteed employment with the City of Omaha or Omaha Police Department.
